Egypt to Change the Rules for Alcohol Purchases in Duty Free Shops

Tax to be paid when buying alcohol in duty free shops in Egypt

Tourdom reports that new rules have been introduced in Egypt for the sale of alcohol to arriving tourists.

In duty free shops in Hurghada, Sharm el Sheikh and other cities, travellers can buy up to two litres of alcohol and two cartons of cigarettes. This can be used within 48 hours of arrival at the resort. Authorities allow up to $200 to spend on such items.

The limit on spirits is increased subject to the payment of one per cent customs tax, but not less than $13 per litre. It turns out that if a standard bottle of wine costs $10, you will have to pay $23 at the checkout.

It is not clear from the text of the regulation how the tax will be levied, experts say. The sellers’ position is cited on social media, where a photo of a shop with a notice in Russian has been posted that it is necessary to pay for each litre. Another publika points out that the prices have increased for each unit of alcohol.

The change in the alcohol norm is not the only innovation. The limit of customs duty exemption on personal belongings of travelers was also increased from ten to 15 thousand Egyptian pounds, that is, up to 35 thousand rubles.

When leaving airports, luggage and personal belongings of guests are let through a scanner, a visual inspection is also possible. Items prohibited for importation are withdrawn, and for those whose price is higher than the norm, they are required to pay a duty. In order to prove to Customs that all imported new items are not intended for resale, experienced travellers advise removing the price tags and factory packaging.
