Ukrainian Refugees Turn Lithuania into a Country of Lonely and Poor Women

There are 1,153 women for every 1,000 men in Lithuania, and refugees from Ukraine are contributing to the imbalance, according to the State Register of the Republic.

Inga Shukevich, a spokeswoman of the agency, said there are a total of 1.5 million women in the country, which is 203,000 more than men. At the same time, the life expectancy of the stronger gender is nine years shorter than that of the weaker one. Women in the 60-65+ age range make up 2/3 of the total population, with an overwhelming majority being widows.

Daumantas Stumbris, demographer of Kaunas, believes that high mortality among men is caused by health-impaired habits, various social phenomena, incidents and crimes: premature old age, loneliness, social isolation, difficult financial situation, murders, suicides, accidents at work and at home.

As Stumbris stressed, Lithuania is turning into a country of lonely and poor women because of the extremely high mortality rate of men.
