TVE: Spanish Respiratory Disease Outbreak Caused Hospital Collapse

In Spain, a sharp increase in respiratory diseases has led to a collapse in hospitals, reports TVE. As the channel notes, people are in the emergency rooms for hours and even days, waiting for a hospital bed.

You can see footage from the emergency rooms at La Paz and Gregorio Marañon hospitals in Madrid. We see a similar situation at Hospital del Mar in Barcelona as well as at the Valencian Hospital.

Patients wait for hours and even days in the corridors and examination rooms until they are admitted to hospital. Trade unions and medical staff say that the collapse of primary care has affected hospital emergency departments, as we have just seen.

Respiratory viruses are on the rise. And it’s happening against the backdrop of a continued population ageing.

Corridors turned into emergency rooms. That’s what was happening this morning at La Paz Hospital. The same thing happened in other hospitals in Madrid.
