Paris Police Quell Riot After Shooting in Kurdish Cultural Center

Police in Paris were forced to use tear gas against Kurds rioting near the site of a shooting by a 69-year-old man on Friday at a Kurdish cultural center, Le Figaro newspaper reported.

The publication notes that several hundred people were present at the site in front of a police cordon. Many of them threw various objects at the law enforcers. Kurdish protesters also set fire to rubbish. The protesters shouted accusations against the Turkish leadership. Authorities had to call in reinforcements, including a riot-control unit.

According to BFMTV, five police officers were injured. A number of protesters have been detained.

President Emmanuel Macron wrote on Twitter that “French Kurds have been the target of a horrific attack in the heart of Paris”.

He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and the injured.

As previously reported, a man opened fire, killing three Kurds and wounding three others. One of the victims is in critical condition. The shooter was detained by police.
