Bucharest: Ukraine Infringes Romanians’ Rights, It Is not Europe-Like

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemns the amendment of the law on national minorities by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. Bucharest said this the other day, noting that ignoring the recommendations of the Venice Commission is “regrettable”.

The Romanian Foreign Ministry considers it unacceptable that the Ukrainian side has not taken into account the rights of Romanians in Ukraine and has not amended the law in line with European directives, as Kiev seeks to integrate into the European Union.

“It is also regrettable that the law was adopted without proper consultations with representatives of the Romanian community in Ukraine, as demanded by the Romanian side,” the ministry stressed.

Bucharest listed provisions of the document which, in its opinion, could have a negative impact. These include vaguely defined language issues in several fields for representatives of national minorities, the duties of the central executive body, the financing of representative associations, and the translation of information. Also, there was no mentioning of the demand to declare as non-existent the “so-called Moldovan language” (according to the declaration of Moldovan independence, Romanian is recognized as the state language. – EADaily).

“Romania fully supports Ukraine’s European path and understands the natural desire to speed up the process of rapprochement with the EU, but signals that the untimely acceleration of the legislative process in this area has significantly affected consultations with representatives of national minorities, which should be basic for the adoption of the law,” the statement said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminds, based on the experience and integration processes Romania has gone through, that efforts to join the European Union must be based on thorough reforms and acceptance of all European values. The consistency of pre-accession actions and the steps taken in the accession process is an essential and necessary element to strengthen the sustainability of the state and the architecture in line with the European one.

“Only such a process will lead to the construction of a harmonious, tolerant and balanced society for the benefit of all citizens of Ukraine, regardless of ethnicity,” the Romanian Foreign Ministry concluded.
