CNA: Mass Strikes Threaten Brits’ Holiday Plans

Hundreds of thousands of employees in Britain are on strike on Christmas eve because of disputes with employers over pay, working conditions and planned staff reductions. Some fear this will spoil the holiday plans of the rest of Britain, CNA’s correspondent reports.

A series of strikes are taking place in the UK, bringing hundreds of thousands of employees out in the run-up to Christmas: nurses, railway workers and postal workers have moved into action over pay and lay-offs disputes.

The strikes, already dubbed Britain’s new “winter of discontent”, were criticized for disrupting people’s holiday plans and further worsening the situation in the NHS.

Nurses have gone on nationwide strike for the first time in 100 years. The Royal College of Nursing is demanding a pay rise of almost 20 per cent to keep up with rising inflation and to compensate the long-standing pay cuts in real terms. During the strikes, nursing staff continue to provide emergency care, but routine medical services have been stopped.

Due to record high electricity and heating bills, some health workers have had to struggle to stay afloat.
