The negotiations in Minsk to resolve the situation in Donbas were serious. This was stated by Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko at the summit of the EEU leaders on 9 December.
He said former German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s recent statement in an interview with Zeit that the Minsk agreements were an attempt to buy time for Ukraine was bewildering.
“I have to tell you, I have given Vladimir Vladimirovich (Russian President Vladimir Putin. – EADaily) my point of view on this. If it was as she says, it is disgusting. But it is not. And the way it really is, it’s not just disgusting – it’s disgusting. Merkel – I didn’t expect that either. And the president of Russia said this: he didn’t expect this kind of outburst from Angela Merkel. She acted in a petty, vile way. She wants to be in the trend. The Minsk agreements and Merkel’s position, as well as others, including Poroshenko (former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. – EADaily), were then very serious. Can you imagine, after the Minsk meetings the whole world was talking about finally taking a step and signing these agreements. The war stopped, people stopped dying. Everyone was positive about it,” he said.
According to him, “if there was deception and preparation for war, it is disgusting.”
“And what Merkel is saying today, echoing Poroshenko, is disgusting. It’s a trend. And they want to be in it. The second thing is that Merkel doesn’t want to be accused today against the backdrop of events in Ukraine: “Well you’re there, you went with Hollande (former French president Francois Hollande. – EADaily), you represented Europe, and you pushed Ukraine the wrong way!” She starts making excuses. Once again, I stress: vile and undignified. She would have been better off sitting down and not coming out. She has undermined everything she has done for Germany and for the European Union. We took her seriously. And Russia took it seriously. But as you see it was mistaken. She turned out to be as petty as all the leaders of Europe today,” Lukashenko stressed.
It should be recalled that in 2015 Minsk hosted negotiations on the settlement of the situation in Ukraine. They resulted in the signing of agreements, which Kiev eventually failed to implement. According to Merkel’s recent statement, she then saw the Minsk agreements as an opportunity to give Ukraine time to build up its power and military resources.
