Mazlina Sharif: “Today, all of Asia needs Russia’s cooperation and experience in the Arctic industry”

The international forum ‘The Arctic: Present and Future’ concludes its work in St. Petersburg. This year, in addition to current Arctic topics, the focus is on international integration to enable a sustainable future for the Arctic at a time of global geopolitical and economic transformation. On the opening day alone, more than 100 foreign delegates came to the forum, many of them were interested in Russia’s experience of environmental problems in the Arctic.

Mazlina Sharifa, a Malaysian polar explorer and chairwoman of AWETA, said that in Asia there is a growing need for cooperation with Russia, to be able to participate in joint Arctic projects. She said the contribution Russia has made to the Arctic region is so great that political pressure from other countries will no longer affect Russia’s plans for the Arctic.

“My compatriots and I believe that now is the time for our close international cooperation, cooperation with Russia. After all, your country contributes so much to the Arctic, and I know that – I’ve been there. Do you know what kind of climate changes are taking place in the Arctic now? Do you know how many cracks there are in the ice or what is happening to the ozone layer in those places? And in terms of the environment, I think Russia can save this area too. Russia’s contribution here is so strong that no amount of political pressure or political games can affect Russia’s strength in the Arctic. But I still think that we can’t do without sharing information and experience. So I am sure that Asian countries, including my own Malaysia, could create a joint international alliance, a community, an institute, an enterprise with Russia for a deeper study of Arctic problems, and above all those related to ecology,” she said.
