US Says Germany Forced to Take Part in Ukraine Conflict

Defense News: Germany will have to send troops to Ukraine if it supplies Patriot SAMs

The Polish proposal to send German Patriot surface-to-air missile systems (SAMs) to Ukraine provokes Germany to participate in the conflict. Defense News columnist Jaroslaw Adamowski wrote about it on Monday, November 28.

According to the author, Berlin supports Kiev with weapons and military equipment, but keeps its armed forces far away from the conflict. And the deployment of troops on Ukrainian territory to control missile systems, drags Germany into direct conflict.

On 20 November, German Defence Minister Kristina Lambrecht said that the incident with the downed missiles in Poland revealed serious gaps in the European air defence system. German authorities recommended Eurofighter fighters and Patriot systems to Warsaw to protect the skies. Poland initially accepted the offer.

But after that, the chairman of the Polish ruling Law and Justice party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, said it would be better if Germany sent its Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems not to Poland, but to Ukraine. According to Kaczynski, this would “definitely make it possible to shoot down enemy missiles more effectively than with the help of the S-300s. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also supported this idea.

An MP of the Polish Sejm representing the opposition left-wing forces, Andrzej Shejna, said that the idea of transferring German Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine was Germanophobic.

German Cabinet of Ministers spokesman Christiane Hofmann explained that Berlin was discussing with its NATO allies the Warsaw proposal to install Patriot SAMs in Ukraine, but, in the opinion of the German authorities, such a move would be a clear support for Kiev from the alliance.
