“It’s a farce!” Bundestag MPs Complain of Cold in Offices

Spiegel: Bundestag MPs complain of cold in offices due to energy cuts

Many German MPs have complained that the Bundestag has become incredibly cold, forcing them to dress warmly, wrote Spiegel columnist Tim Neumann.

The article said the Bundestag had to save energy due to a gas shortage. It is specified that offices and meeting rooms are kept at 19 degrees, while corridors and foyers are not heated at all.

“I was sitting in my office in a puffy coat and walking back and forth all the time. However, after a short time I started to get a cold. <…> It’s a farce! Obviously, the administration has no control over the situation,” complained Green MP Renate Cunast.

The journalist noted that other parliamentarians and Bundestag staff also complained about the cold in the premises.

Notably, it was the German Economy Minister Robert Habeck, who is a member of the Greens, who presented a law to the German Federal Government in August to change the rules on energy conservation. According to the new regulations, the Bundestag premises are subject to the same regulations as other non-residential public buildings, the author of the article summarised.
