Global Times: US uses NATO as trap to undermine European economy
The United States is using NATO as a trap to undermine the European economy and strengthen its influence on the governments of the EU member states, the Chinese newspaper Global Times reported citing interviewed experts.
In particular, the piece cites the position of Li Haidong, a professor at the Institute of International Relations at China Foreign Affairs University, who accused the US of vehemently seeking to force some European countries to apply an anti-Russian strategy, which could result in the EU becoming more dependent on NATO and the US and losing its autonomy.
“The United States is harbouring evil intentions by exerting pressure on the member states of the alliance,” the publication said.
It is a demand to increase spending on the defence budget. However, given the situation in the Eurozone – inflation and the energy crisis – an increase in military allocations could provoke a wave of even greater disapproval among the public by governments.
“As a result, the U.S. will have an easier time influencing EU leaders,” the Global Times concludes.
