Restaurant Owner Demands €149 for Wiener Schnitzel Because of Energy Prices

Berliner Zeitung: Viennese schnitzel has become a luxury for employees of energy companies in Austria

Austrian restaurateur Ulrich Matlschweiger has set “special prices” for his menus. The move was spurred on by the rising price of electricity. Now for a full meal at his place will have to pay nearly 300 euros, writes BZ. But such bills Matlschweiger is not charged to all visitors.

A few days ago, a restaurateur from Saxony made headlines when he announced that he would only serve roast goose in his restaurant on prepayment terms. The fact is that, due to rising energy prices, he is forced to ask for more than 35 euros for each portion. That’s why he had to introduce the rule: pay first, eat later! His colleague from neighboring Austria decided to form his prices in a completely different way.

A Vienna schnitzel for €149, a Greek salad with butter for €54, pancake soup for €43, and sweet pancakes (although 2 pieces) for €42. At the sight of such prices, some visitors to the Hoamat restaurant in the Austrian town of Landl lose their appetite.

While in Austria, a normal Viennese schnitzel costs about 25 euros, restaurateur Ulrich Matlschweiger from Styria (where the Landl is located) broke all records with these prices. Anyone wishing to order a full meal in his establishment would have to pay 288 – including tips, as the menu specifically states.

Fortunately, not everyone has to pay these special prices. According to the Kleine Zeitung, Ulrich Matlschweiger charges these prices to a very small exclusive group, the energy industry.

The latest electricity bill prompted him to take this step. Within just a couple of months, his energy costs skyrocketed from 300 to 5,200 euros.

“The current costs that I have to incur as a restaurateur to maintain my enterprise make me work to the limit. As an entrepreneur, I’m used to calculating carefully. But to even out the rising costs in the current situation, you have to outdo yourself,” complains Matlschweiger. – That’s why I’ve introduced a special menu for power engineers that corresponds to the increase in electricity prices for me. I will send it to all responsible persons in the energy companies and officials in positions of responsibility.
