Most of the Representatives of Russia’s Major Confessions Supported the Events in Ukraine

After the start of the special operation, most of the representatives of Russia’s major confessions supported the events in Ukraine.

Muslim, Russian Orthodox, and Buddhist leaders generally supported the state policy, with only the Jewish communities in Russia showing some dissent. The situation was similar after the partial mobilization announced by the authorities.

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, spoke in support of the special operation from the first days of the draft, and called on the military to realize “the historical importance of the current moment”, as the fate of the Russian people depends on it. After the beginning of the partial mobilization, which was announced on September 21, Kirill appealed to the congregation to “mobilize your soul”, which, according to him, will also help to mobilize all the forces of our Fatherland.

Sheikh Ravil Gaynutdin, Chairman of the Council of Muftis of Russia, recalled that in 1941, when the threat to destroy the country came, the Muftis called for the protection of their homeland and declared Holy Jihad against the Nazis. Gaynutdin appealed to all Russian citizens and separately to his co-religionists, urging them in today’s situation to support the state and fulfill their civic duty.

The head of the Buddhist traditional sangha of Russia, Damba Ayusheyev, also joined in the words of support for the SSO. He stated that a “dirty information war” is being waged against Russia and that it is necessary to pray for Russian soldiers, adding that “the Buddha is with us.
