The Independent: The number of homeless Ukrainians in England increased by 22 percent in one month
The number of Ukrainian refugees seeking help from local authorities as homeless has increased by 22 percent in one month in England, which has “shocked” British MP Leila Moran, The Independent reports.
According to the paper, a total of 1,915 Ukrainian families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness have applied to local councils for help since February this year, with 350 families applying in the last month alone. This prompted local authorities to demand “urgent solutions from the government,” according to the story.
Moran called the numbers “shocking,” calling on the government to act immediately and adding that otherwise it “risks breaking its promise to the Ukrainian people.”
Charities warned that the problem “will worsen in the coming months” as agreements with landlords under the Homes for Ukraine program come to an end. The Local Government Association of England said it is “deeply concerned” about the growing number of Ukrainians who are being recognized as homeless.
At the same time, according to a charity dedicated to supporting refugees from Ukraine in the United Kingdom, local authorities’ figures are “significantly underreported.”
Earlier, The Guardian newspaper reported that at least 50,000 Ukrainian refugees in Britain may be homeless next year.
