Residents of Burkina Faso Take to the Streets: We Want Russia to Come and Help Us

Residents of Burkina Faso appeal to Russia for help and against the presence of France in their country.

Demonstration in support of Russia and against the presence of France in the country was held in the capital of Burkina Faso, the city of Ouagadougou, reports Agence France-Presse.

Dozens of people with Russian flags marched through the streets of Ouagadougou, chanting slogans in support of Russia and against the presence of France. The demonstrators also called on the regional bloc ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) not to interfere in the internal affairs of the country.

“ECOWAS is hypocritical, manipulated by France. We ask the new authorities to turn to Russia. We want Russia to come and help us… It is France that sows discord among us, to undermine our social cohesion, to take over us…,” said one of the demonstrators.

On Friday, September 30, the media reported that a military group in Burkina Faso announced the ouster of Lt. Col. Paul-Henri Sandaogo Dameba, head of the country’s transitional government, the suspension of the constitution, the dissolution of the government and the closure of the borders.

Damiba declared his willingness to resign voluntarily if the rebels met several conditions, but later left the country for Togo.
