“Squeeze out Sandu!”: Protesters Break Through to the Presidential Administration in Chisinau

Mass protests in the Moldovan capital on September 25, escalated into a breakthrough by protesters into the territory of President Maia Sandu’s administration and clashes with police.

On Sunday morning, convoys of buses and cars from across Moldova drove to Chisinau to protest. Despite transport being blocked by police, the protesters managed to reach the capital, where Chisinau residents, dissatisfied with Sandu’s policies, were waiting for them.

At first, the Moldovans staged creative protests, such as squeezing juice from grapes under the slogan

“Squeeze Sandu like she squeezes you!”

However, people then set up a tent camp outside the government building, demanding the resignation of the Moldovan president, as well as the dissolution of parliament and early elections. Protesters then tried to break through a police cordon outside the Moldovan presidential administration building.

“This is certainly not Kiev in November 2013: hardly any of the Western embassies or Western NGOs equal in influence in Chisinau will react to the “brutal beating”. This time they were beating strangers to protect their own. But the atmosphere in Moldova is stormy and without external pumping – for purely internal reasons Maya Sandu may not sit in the chair until the end of the presidential term,” – commented in his Telegram channel political scientist Alexander Nosovich.
