Media: France Secretly Trains Ukrainian Military

France may be secretly providing specialized training to the Ukrainian military, the Politico website reported, citing an adviser to the French Defence Ministry.

According to the adviser, Paris refused to provide mass training to Ukrainian soldiers. The publication, citing official French data, points out that France has trained around 40 Ukrainian servicemen since the start of the Russian special operation, mostly to use self-propelled Caesar howitzers. However, the official hinted that there could be “specialised” training under Paris’ direction.

“Britain has decided to provide basic training. We are doing more specialised training. We do not intend to tell you everything we do,” the publication quoted the adviser as saying.

Politico, citing a military official, says London’s initiative to train the Ukrainian military will not be sufficient to meet existing demand.

According to the publication, discussions are under way to set up a training base within NATO. However, according to some members of the alliance, the existence of such a centre would confirm Moscow’s claims that NATO is not just a defence alliance.

According to one Western official, the Ukrainians will need additional training amid the offensive. Yet, the army will need at least a year to retrain, the source said.
