Timon Ostemeier of Bremen, Germany, told the journalists in Samarkand that he lived in Kazakhstan in Central Asia for a year and a half and studied international relations and the regions in general in Russia. He has also been to Siberia, Tomsk and Moscow and St. Petersburg. Ostemeyer shared his views on the SCO- 2022 summit and also talked about the attitude towards Russians in his country.
“I have an exceptionally positive experience with people from Russia, I have met many friends here. I really enjoyed being here. I think the SCO summit will play a very important role for the region. In my view, the summit is dominated today by the two countries, Russia and China. Of course, topics concerning Ukraine will be raised more than once. But I am rather sceptical about it. Everything depends on how events will develop in Ukraine. My prediction is that the special operation will last for several more years. And I do not exclude that there will be something like a kind of iron curtain, with the European Union and the United States on one side and Russia and China on the other. Well, I’ll tell it like it is. Public opinion in Germany and Europe is really strongly set against Russia right now. Yes, if you are Russian, of course you will not be attacked on our streets, but the political situation is such that people in Europe support Ukraine now. Of course, there is a kind of paranoia in other European Union member states, such as Poland and the Baltic States. They are afraid that Russia will invade them. I don’t believe that, of course. But it is a common fear that dominates,” Timon Ostmeyer explained to reporters.
More than 40 documents have already been signed at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), including a comprehensive plan to implement a treaty on long-term good neighbourliness, friendship and cooperation.
