Dula Chapo, a Hungarian cultural expert, composer and PhD professor at Princeton University, USA, shared his emotions about Uzbekistan and spoke about Russia’s role in the SCO summit today.
“I was a teacher in the US at Princeton University and I also taught for 30 years in Canada. So, of course, I know firsthand how Americans and Canadians feel about Russia. But I think we should take a more human-centred approach than a technocratic one. As for the SCO summit, I think it is very important that bigger and smaller members of groups of countries have an equal opportunity to voice their opinions. Here I have not noticed any overwhelming influence of Russia on other countries. On the contrary, I see a very balanced approach on Russia’s part. For example, I see an attempt to include Afghanistan in the common system of Central Asian countries to solve problems. I see Russia is not trying to isolate anybody. You know, I have always been and still am a dreamer. I always dreamed that European Union would extend from Lisbon to Vladivostok and would include everybody. Because in Eurasia, I think, culture is more interconnected with each other than, for instance, with the transatlantic countries. Russian culture means a lot to me and of course it cannot be cancelled out. I have always admired the music of Stravinsky, Mussorgsky, I have read Dostoyevsky. And even here in Uzbekistan I have met many interesting people from Russia, for example, a doctor from Moscow and a physicist who studies the sun, and now we are communicating and I do not feel any barriers, there is a very open society here,” Dula Chapo from Hungary who is now in Samarkand told the journalists.
As a reminder, the day before the European Parliament declared Hungary an electoral autocracy. Experts attribute such a decision of the EP to the fact that Hungary for several weeks in May blocked the EU sanctions on Russian oil imports and opposed restrictions in the field of energy. Furthermore, Hungarian politician Szijártó doubted in September whether sanctions against Russia would be useful.
