British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is running for prime minister. But a few years ago the politician allowed herself a series of unflattering remarks about workers, writes The Guardian newspaper.
Liz Truss advised British workers to work harder outside London and criticized their way of thinking. The country’s prime ministerial candidate recommended looking at China, where the situation is radically different.
“There is a fundamental problem with British working culture. In fact, if we want to become a richer, more prosperous country, that has to change. But I don’t think people want to change that. We say that it’s Europe that’s giving us these huge problems, that all these migrants are giving us these problems. But in reality what you have to do is to work harder. It’s not a very popular call,” Truss said.
According to Truss’ campaign spokesperson, such statements are taken out of context. The UK population needs to be given a boost of productivity so that there are high wages and standards of living, Sky News quoted him as saying.
