Daily Express: Half of Britain’s fish-and-chips restaurants could close due to sanctions
Around half of British restaurants specialising in Britain’s popular fish-and-chips dish could close due to sanctions imposed on Russia amid rising costs of ingredients and energy, the Daily Express reports.
“Around 5,000 diners (chips and chips – ed.) are in danger as retailers have to switch to cheaper products and raise prices,” the report said.
As noted by the newspaper, the UK earlier imposed a duty of 35% on imports of seafood from Russia.
According to Andrew Crook, owner of a fish-and-chips restaurant in Lancashire, cod supply prices have risen from eight pounds to 14 pounds per kilogram.
Earlier, owners of British fish-and-chips cafes and restaurants said they intended to seek Norwegian help in supplying fish in order to curb price rises due to British sanctions on Russia.
