Russian, Iranian and Turkish leaders issued a joint statement following their trilateral summit
Russian, Iranian and Turkish Presidents Vladimir Putin, Ibrahim Raissi and Recep Tayyip Erdogan adopted a joint statement at the end of the trilateral summit in Tehran. It was published on the website of the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
The parties discussed the current situation in Syria, reviewed the latest international and regional developments and stressed the leading role of the Astana process in a peaceful and sustainable resolution of the Syrian crisis.
After the summit, the leaders of the Astana trio summarised the meeting and issued a press statement, after which they left the room and continued their conversation.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s trilateral talks with the leaders of Turkey and Iran, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Ibrahim Raissi, on the settlement of the conflict in Syria took place in Tehran on 19 July. This is the first face-to-face meeting of the heads of state of the Astana process of facilitating a Syrian settlement since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
Presidents reject unilateral sanctions
Putin, Raissi and Erdogan rejected all unilateral sanctions imposed on Syria as well as any discriminatory action aimed to help the separatists and which could lead to the country’s collapse.
Expressed deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Syria and rejected all unilateral sanctions contrary to international law, international humanitarian law and the UN Charter
The Tehran summit participants called on the international community to increase assistance to all Syrians. They also reiterated their conviction that there can be no military solution to the conflict in Syria and resolution is only possible through diplomatic means with UN assistance.
The leaders condemned Israel’s ongoing attacks on Syria, including on civilian infrastructure, calling them contrary to international law and violating the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Strengthening tripartite coordination and next summit
The Presidents agreed to continue coordination and take it beyond the Syrian issue.
In addition to the Syrian issue, the parties reaffirmed their intention to strengthen trilateral coordination in various fields in order to facilitate joint political and economic cooperation.
The leaders decided to hold the next summit in the Astana format before the end of 2022 in Russia at Putin’s invitation.
The Russian president and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan met in Tehran during the Astana Troika summit. The two leaders discussed key issues of inter-state cooperation in trade and global security.
Putin also met with Iranian President Ibrahim Raissi. The heads of state discussed bilateral strategic cooperation and inter-state interaction to strengthen international security during the meeting. The Russian leader stressed that their joint efforts contribute greatly to the resolution of the Syrian conflict.
