Media: Europe Will Face Energy Crisis Earlier than Expected Because of Hot Weather

Because of the heat wave, Europe is likely to face an energy “storm” earlier than expected, with the region being insufficiently prepared for the chaos it will bring, Bloomberg reported, citing analysts at Rystad Energy.

As noted in the story, Maxar believes that temperatures in parts of the UK and France could rise to record levels early this week. While solar energy production is rising, it is also increasing demand for cooling and pushing up global prices for liquefied natural gas.

Rystad Energy believes that rising temperatures will prevent Europe from recovering its gas reserves in the run-up to winter. Thus, storage levels on the continent remain below normal for this time of year.

“Our updated scenarios show that Europe is likely to face the storm much earlier than previously thought and that the region will be under-prepared for the chaos it will bring,” the analysts point out.

The next wave of hot weather will be the second in Western Europe in the last month. Scientists link it directly to warming climate and the greenhouse effect and warn of a possible increase in forest fires which have already been reported in France, Portugal, Greece and Spain, destroying thousands of hectares of forest.

“Gazprom” has reduced supplies through Nord Stream since mid-June, explaining this by delays in repairing turbines by Germany’s Siemens. In particular, Siemens could not return a turbine from the Portovaya compressor station from that country, where it was undergoing repairs, due to Canadian sanctions against the Russian company. Since 16 June, the supply was 40% of the capacity of the pipeline (from 11 to 21 July, it was stopped for scheduled maintenance). Canada later announced that it had decided to return the turbine at Germany’s request.
