Media: Millions of Families in the UK Slashed their Food Spending

Millions of British families have been forced to eliminate meat and fish from their diets amid a sharp rise in food prices, the Daily Mail reports. Sales of all types of meat, fish and poultry have fallen in the past three months compared to the same period last year. Beef sales fell 13.7%, pork 10.6%, lamb 23.7% and fish 11.6%, according to analyst firm Kantar.

Britons are now looking for cheaper sources of protein, switching from expensive tenderloin meat to cheaper chicken.

The publication stresses that vegans and vegetarians spend substantially more on food than the average person in the country.

Following the launch of a special military operation to denazify and demilitarise Ukraine, the West has stepped up sanctions on Russia. Calls to give up Russian energy have become louder. The disruption of supply chains has led to higher fuel, electricity and food prices in Europe and the US. In the UK, the rising cost of living has hit millions of households.

According to the UK Office for National Statistics, the country’s annual inflation at the end of April was the highest since March 1982 – 9% compared with 7% a month earlier. Consumer prices rose 2.5% in April after rising 1.1% in March. In May, annual inflation in the UK reached a record 9.1% since 1982.
