“Alcohol and Psychotropics”: Austrian Chancellor on Smoothing the Gas Crisis

Nehammer: in the case of a sharp rise in gas prices, one will either have to drink alcohol or use psychotropics

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer has outlined two possible ways for Austrians to survive a gas price hike. According to the politician, local residents would either have to drink alcohol or switch to psychotropic substances. Nehammer himself preferred the first option.

If we go on like this, there are only two options to choose from: alcohol or psychotropic drugs. <…> Alcohol is, in principle, okay,” Nehammer said.

Earlier, Vice President of the European Commission (EC) Valdis Dombrovskis said that the EU did not consider a complete cessation of gas supplies from Russia as the main scenario of the conflict with Moscow. At the same time, representatives of the EC nevertheless admitted the risk of stopping Russian gas transit to Europe.

The press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia will be able to increase the volume of gas supplies to Europe if Canada returns the turbine of the Nord Stream pipeline. He rejected accusations that Russia was using oil or gas as an instrument of political pressure.
