Media: Ukraine Buys Grenade Launchers from Germany

Kiev for the second time purchased anti-tank grenade launchers of the RGW 90 Matador type from Germany at its own expense – about 2,900 were added to the 5,100 ordered in March. Thus, Ukraine received a total of about 8,000 such guns, Welt newspaper reported, citing the Ukrainian government circles.

According to the newspaper, Kiev bought the weapons directly from the manufacturer; in March, the grenade launchers were purchased from German weapons company Dynamit Nobel Defence (DND). The order was fulfilled in two tranches – first 2,300 guns were delivered and then another 576 pieces.

According to Kiev, the grenade launchers are already in Ukraine, the newspaper said. Welt notes that this usually requires a request to the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) and the approval of the Federal Security Council. The Economics Ministry, which has jurisdiction over BAFA, declined to comment for the newspaper.

The RGW 90 Matador type anti-tank grenade launcher is a 90mm gun weighing 8.9kg and 1m long and capable of hitting targets at ranges of 14m to 500m.

On 22 June, German Defence Minister Christina Lambrecht said that the first batch of heavy weapons, seven PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers, had been delivered to Ukraine and the Ukrainian military was trained to use them in the FRG, Welt reported. The next delivery will be three Mars II MLRSs. In addition, the USA and the UK will supply seven additional artillery pieces.
