Melnik Condescends to Apologise to Scholz for “Liverwurst”

Ukrainian ambassador to Berlin Andriy Melnik, who called German Chancellor Olaf Scholz an “offended liverwurst sausage”, has condescended to apologize after a month and a half. He said this in an interview published on the website of the German magazine Spiegel.

“In retrospect, I naturally regret what I said. I will personally apologise to him,” Melnik said.

According to the Ukrainian diplomat, his act did not please Zelensky and he had to explain himself to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. Melnik did not mention his other harsh remarks against the German government.

Melnik also said that he wanted to talk to German Chancellor Scholz personally.

We shall remind you that on 3 May the Ukrainian ambassador to Berlin called Scholz an “offended liverwurst” (beleidigte Leberwurst). The German chancellor was humiliated by Ambassador Melnik because of his unwillingness to visit Kiev. Scholz himself later refused to comment on the public remarks to his address, but the hurtful comparison angered Germans. Many demanded the Ukrainian ambassador’s resignation. With Melnik’s light hand, the name “sausage” is now widely used in the press in reference to Scholz.
