The Jubilee St. Petersburg International Economic Forum Opens

The jubilee XXV St. Petersburg International Economic Forum SPIEF-2022 will be held in St. Petersburg from 15 to 18 June.  It will be held under the theme “The New World – New Opportunities”, reports RGRU. A plenary session with the President of Russia is scheduled for 17 June. The world press is eagerly awaiting the Russian leader’s speech.

Despite unprecedented sanctions, applications to participate in SPIEF came from 60 countries.

Among the participants are official delegations and representatives of the scientific, cultural and business communities of various countries: China, India, Cuba, Venezuela, Egypt, UAE, Turkey, Italy, Canada, France, USA and Taiwan.

According to the forum organizers, more than 500 speakers who have confirmed their participation in advance, will speak at the business programme. Many of them have come to pave new ways for interaction with Russia. That is, contrary to negative forecasts, Russia, despite everything, is of interest to the global community in terms of investment and other types of cooperation.

More than a hundred journalists have been accredited to cover the event. Besides Russian observers, the forum will host 136 foreign journalists from Great Britain, Japan, Azerbaijan, as well as: Belarus, Tajikistan, Serbia, Syria, Kazakhstan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Vietnam, Ghana, Germany, Egypt, India, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Spain, Ireland, Italy, China, Latvia, Lebanon, Morocco, Pakistan, Singapore, USA, Taiwan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, France, Switzerland, Estonia.

In his welcoming address to the forum’s participants, organisers and guests, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that years of Western economic policy mistakes and sanctions have led to global inflation, rising poverty and food shortages.

The jubilee meeting is taking place at a difficult time for the entire international community. Years of mistakes in economic policy by Western countries and illegitimate sanctions have led to a wave of global inflation, the destruction of the usual supply and production chains, a sharp rise in poverty and food shortages. But, as it happens, the challenges are accompanied by opportunities. That is why the motto of the forum “New World – New Opportunities” is so relevant, – said the President.

Observers have noted a fundamental difference between the Forum of 2022 and the previous SPIEFs. The indisputable difference between SPIEF 2022 and the forum is the participation of economists and public figures representing an alternative point of view in the discussions.

A large part of the forum’s programme will be devoted to international relations. On 16 June, for example, there will be a Russia-China session with speakers discussing Russian-Chinese trade and economic cooperation.

Another important event on June 16 will be a session on economic cooperation between Russia and Egypt. Separate sessions will also be devoted to Russia’s relations with Latin America and Iran.

A number of events at SPIEF 2022 will be aimed at discussing the new economic realities. Thus, on June 18, the session on Russia’s foreign economic activity under current conditions will be held.

However, modern challenges concern not only representatives of the business sector but also the media industry. The speakers will discuss information policy in the era of post-truth on June 18.

The head of state may also hold separate meetings with representatives of the business community during the forum. However, no traditional meetings with the management of foreign companies and international investors are planned this year, the Kremlin said.
