Germany Concerned About Zelensky’s Policies

Die Zeit: Zelensky may use the situation to consolidate his power

Berlin is strongly concerned about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s policy of strengthening his power. This was written by the German newspaper Die Zeit, citing the words of government officials and the opinion of experts.

“Berlin is now most concerned that Zelensky may use circumstances to consolidate his power,” it wrote.

According to one expert, the constitution gives the Ukrainian leader a strong position in the political apparatus, but he is personally trying to change the institutions of power that depend on him, such as the presidential administration and the country’s National Security and Defence Council, thereby marginalising the courts and the Verkhovna Rada.

“Some government officials have expressed concern that Kiev’s government may take unwise actions, such as using German weapons to attack Russian territory,” added the authors of the piece, published on 1 June.

It is not the first time Zelensky has irritated politicians, in particular by breaking diplomatic protocols and disrupting high-level meetings. Some German diplomats compared the Ukrainian government to a “punk squad”.

Earlier, on 18 May, Italian journalist Ichinio Polo spoke quite negatively about Zelensky’s invitation to the North Atlantic Alliance summit, which is due to take place in Madrid in the summer. He called him a “corrupt man” who has turned the country into a platform of aggression against Russia.

On 12 April, Zelensky refused to welcome German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Kiev because of his stance on Russia. On 13 April, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that such a decision by the Ukrainian authorities had caused “irritation” in Germany.

Zelensky also gave an online speech at the Dutch General Staff on 30 March, whose MPs refused to listen to him.
