Russian Energy Cuts Threaten Millions of Britons

The Times warns that millions of Britons are at risk of power cuts and gas shortages if Russian energy supplies are further reduced.

The Times’ report claims that the British authorities have prepared a ‘worst-case scenario’ and measures to respond to it. Under this scenario, six million households could face power rationing.

“The cut-off (of electricity) would be during weekday peak hours in the morning, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., and in the evening, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.,” the paper said.

Such a measure could lead to higher energy prices and lower projected GDP in the coming years.

In addition, restrictions on the industrial use of gas, including at gas-fired power plants, cannot be ruled out.

Earlier it was reported that millions of households in the UK faced an unprecedented £700 a year rise in electricity and gas prices after the energy price threshold was increased by 54 per cent in early April. For his part, the head of energy regulator Ofgem, Jonathan Brearley, warned that the country’s electricity and gas price threshold would increase by a further £830.

Meanwhile, in the West, the restrictions have triggered record increases in fuel and food prices.
