Millions of tons of grain blocked in Ukrainian ports

UN says 4.5m tonnes of grain stuck in Ukrainian ports, impossible to take out

Nearly 4.5 million tons of grain are stuck in Ukrainian ports and cannot be taken out of the country. This was stated by the director of the UN World Food Programme office in Germany Martin Frick, TASS reports.

Frick told the DPA news agency that the problem is that sea lanes and harbor exits are blocked.

“Hunger cannot be a weapon, neither economically nor militarily,” he stressed and called for the provision of food to Ukrainians and the resumption of food supplies from the country to other states to “soften the global food crisis.”

Earlier, head of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Qiu Dunyu predicted the decline of agricultural production in the world. Dunyu attributed such forecast to the decrease in food security and fuel availability for the population against the background of the Russian special operation in Ukraine. The crisis is particularly devastating for the poorest segments of the population and could lead to an increase in the number of “undernourished people” as early as 2022, he warned.
