Le Figaro: “no suspects, no motives” – a wave of mysterious injections in nightclubs leaves French law enforcers stumped

In France a wave of mysterious crimes in nightclubs is gaining momentum, the victims of which receive a sudden injection and lose consciousness, reports Le Figaro. According to the newspaper, so far attempts to investigate the incidents have come to nothing. Most discouraging to investigators is the lack of motive of the criminals – not a single victim reported robbery or rape, the newspaper said.

Since February, mysterious attacks with the use of syringes on girls, and sometimes on young people at discos, concert halls and festivals have become more frequent in France, reports Le Figaro. According to the newspaper, the victims feel the injection and immediately afterwards experience dizziness, nausea or a sudden loss of memory.

Some do not even notice the injection, but experience great discomfort – and after a few days their body is marked with a red spot surrounded by a bruise. According to the newspaper, similar crimes are investigated in many cities, and each time investigators wonder about the contents of the syringes. It is not known whether the drug is the so-called “drug of the rapists” – gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, which some criminals put in the drinks of their victims to take advantage of their helpless state later.

To date, the test results provided to the investigation show nothing.  As explained by law enforcement officials, traces of this kind of toxic substances disappear from the body as early as eight hours after injection, and most tests are done much later. Equally disturbing is the fact that these attacks seem to have no apparent motive. None of the victims were abused. No reports of sexual assault or rape have been reported either.

“We are taking the case seriously, but we are all puzzled,” says Abdelkrim Grini, prosecutor of Roanne in the Loire department, where a 19-year-old girl and a 23-year-old young man suffered the same night of nightclub punctures. However, the investigation in both cases did not lead to the arrest of the suspect.

In other parts of France, the outcome is the same.  There is also a hypothesis that we are talking about copycat crimes: reports of injections in some regions inspired someone to repeat them in other regions. Earlier similar mysterious attacks became known in the UK and Scotland. Meanwhile, the representative of the union of hotel business professionals Thierry Fontaine demands to stop the wave of attacks, which creates a “real psychosis”. At one of his hotels, where several victims have been registered, attendance has dropped by 50%.
