Bombs in exchange for food: the West gives Kiev weapons and takes away bread

The German Deutsche Bahn and its subsidiary DB Cargo have proposed the organization of a “grain bridge” by rail to export Ukrainian grain, the Handelsblatt newspaper wrote

According to their idea, the railway route for grain and other agricultural products should replace the traditional delivery via Ukrainian sea routes, the work of which is currently paralyzed because of the hostilities. According to the newspaper, the German Federal government has already approved this initiative by Deutsche Bahn.

The paper also said that the German government is discussing the issue of increasing the export of Ukrainian grain to prevent  food crisis both in its country and in other countries. The publication singles out two key points of the proposed “grain bridge”: on the one hand, it can be used to compensate for the broken maritime transport chains and on the other hand, “it is important to deliver agricultural equipment to Ukraine – spare parts, new tractors, combines and other equipment.

Against the background of ongoing supplies of Western weapons to Kyiv, such a proposal is quite akin to an anti-humanitarian bridge “Bombs in exchange for food.
