“The living will envy the dead”: the Czech Republic is scared of the Russian gas embargo

Expert Noveski: most Czechs will freeze to death next winter under Russian gas embargo

If an embargo on Russian gas is imposed, most Czechs will freeze to death next winter and by this fall most Czech industry will be shut down, energy expert Ivan Noveski told the Parlamentní listy newspaper.

In his opinion such a scenario would result in many plants including car and glass factories to stop working. This, he believes, will provoke record unemployment in the country. Also, if the supply of natural gas from Russia is cut off, Czech transport may stop working and there may be “a complete collapse of the entire country.

“If the supply of Russian gas, on which we have been almost one hundred percent dependent for 50 years, is stopped, next winter most Czech citizens will freeze to death. They may be considered lucky, because the day may come when the living will envy the dead. After all, even before winter, most of the industry still working will stop,” Noveski suggested.

The cease of Russian gas imports will make it impossible to produce fertilizers, the interlocutor of the newspaper explained.

“Without fertilizers, there will be no crops, and without crops there will be nothing to eat. Literally! For a while, a jet set will probably survive on supplies, but most food production and processing will also need gas,” the expert said.

Noveski is sure that people calling for an immediate embargo on blue fuel from Russia are “either crazy or criminals.”
